термин ссылается на семейство ОС корпорации Microsoft. Первая версия этой системы (Windows 1.0) появилась в 1985 г. На её разработку Microsoft потребовалось всего 55 человеко-лет, и она всего лишь обеспечивала работу в именованных окнах. Следующая версия (Windows 2.0), появившаяся в 1987 г., имела уже такие возможности, как перекрывающиеся окна и пиктограммы (icons). При появлении Windows/386 в конце 1987 г. эта версия была переименована в Windows/286. В 1990 г. была выпущена полностью переработанная версия (Windows 3.0) с возможностью адресации ОЗУ за границей 640 Кбайт. В версии Windows 3.1 были добавлены поддержка шрифтов True Type и технология OLE. Бесплатное обновление этой версии, в котором были только исправлены ошибки, получило название Windows 3.11

Windows is a group of several proprietary graphical operating system families developed and marketed by Microsoft. Each family caters to a certain sector of the computing industry. Windows is the most popular desktop operating system in the world, with 75% market share as of April 2022, according to StatCounter. However, Windows is not the most used operating system when including both mobile and desktop OSes, due to Android's massive growth.
As of September 2022, the most recent version of Windows is Windows 11 for consumer PCs and tablets, Windows 11 Enterprise for corporations, and Windows Server 2022 for servers.
